PROFESSOR DEREK FRASER EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF HISTORY UNIVERSITY OF TEESSIDE

Professor Derek Fraser is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Teesside where he served as Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive for 11 years. Since 2008 he has been the Independent Football Ombudsman (IFO), having previously been the Chairman of the Independent Football Commission for the whole of its existence from 2001-2008. He has had a varied career involving time as a schoolteacher, university lecturer, HMI, senior civil servant and deputy director of a polytechnic. He has been awarded professorships at three universities, Bradford, UCLA and Teesside. Derek Fraser has an extensive list of publications in the field of modern British History, with special expertise in urban and welfare history. He has sometimes been called Fraser of the Welfare State, because of his best known work, The Evolution of the British Welfare State, which has gone through 5 editions since its original publication in 1973. He is writing a new book on The Beveridge Report which will be published in 2022 to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the original publication

Derek is a keen bridge player, ranked by the English Bridge Union (EBU) as a 3-star regional master. He is a qualified EBU County Level Tournament Director and has run may regional, club and charity bridge events. He has been a Bridge Director on board, offering tuition at all levels. He has been married to Ruth for over 58 years and they have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. He has been lecturing on cruise ships since 2003.
